Funding for the HEARing CRC has been made available through the Commonwealth Government’s Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) program. The CRC program is coordinated and run through the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.

The Program was established by Commonwealth in 1990 to improve the effectiveness of Australia’s research and development activity. The close interaction between researchers and the users of research is fundamental to the approach, driving relevant research and rapid commercialisation and utilisation of findings.

Since the commencement of the program, participants have committed more than $12.3 billion (cash and in-kind) to CRCs. This includes $3 billion from the Australian Government, $3.1 billion from universities, $2.5 billion from industry and almost $1.2 billion from CSIRO.

There are currently about 50 CRCs operating across six sectors:

• Manufacturing Technology
• Information and Communication Technology
• Mining and Energy
• Agriculture and Rural-Based Manufacturing
• Environment; and
• Medical Science and Technology
